Cordyceps - Cordyceps sinensis
In the wild, Cordyceps sinensis grows in the Himalayas, at altitudes over 3800m. It is just one of over 600 species of Cordyceps which are found across the planet. In nature, it grows as a parasite, usually on hibernating moth caterpillars buried in the ground. Traditionally it has been collected by nomadic peoples.
Known for well over 1000 years, Cordyceps was, until recently, a rare and valuable fungus. Because of its extreme cost and scarcity, only the very rich could afford it, so its' use was limited almost exclusively to Emperors and the rich and powerful.
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) Cordyceps has a range of uses, particularly for aiding breathing, kidney and liver complaints and as a revitaliser for the elderly and a performance enhancer for the athlete. It also performs well against certain forms of cancer and is an immune-system booster. And it has a reputation for being a potent aphrodisiac.
Since the late 1970s it has been possible to cultivate Cordyceps artificially and since the cultivated mycelium has properties almost identical to those of the wild fungus, it is no longer necessary to use wild Cordyceps. The quality and properties of cultivated Cordyceps can be guaranteed, whilst wild Cordyceps is often adulterated by inserting bits of twig - and even soldering wire - into the mummified body of the caterpillar from which the fungus grows. This provides a little more income for the nomads, but could be potentially poisonous for the end user.
All the Cordyceps used in Fruiting Bodies' extracts comes from cultivated organic Cordyceps sinensis
