THE USE OF AN RNA DIETARY NUCLEOTIDE SUPPLEMENT IN THE ALLEVIATION OF SYMPTOMS OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME: A DOUBLE-BLIND RANDOMISED CROSS-OVER PLACEBO STUDY

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder of unknown aetiology, and for which treatments are less than effective. This study tested whether IBS symptoms were improved by Intestaid IB, which is a food supplement based on RNA dietary nucleotides, which play key roles in many biological processes.
Thirty-seven people with a confirmed diagnosis of IBS completed symptom diaries for a baseline period of 28 days. This was followed by 56 days of the experimental condition and placebo condition, with a four-week washout period between conditions. Analysis was by interrupted time series, which evaluates the impact of the intervention(s), taking into account the patterns in the data at baseline.
All symptoms were improved to a greater extent for participants taking Intestaid IB as compared to placebo. The percentage of participants who showed a significant response to the placebo condition varied from 13.9% to 35.1%.
Symptoms that were significantly improved by Intestaid IB were abdominal pain, urgency, and feelings of incomplete evacuation. Other symptoms where an improvement was noted were bloating, diarrhoea and flatulence.
Overall the average % of patients improved was 23.73% for participants on IntestAidIB.
Furthermore, there was a tendency for abdominal pain and incomplete evacuation to reduce over the eight-week experimental period.

The symptoms analysed were abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence, incomplete evacuation and urgency.
