Bowel cancer is the second mot deadly in the UK - killing 16,000 people each year.

In the early stages of many colon diseases there may be no visible symptoms even though blood may be present in faeces. This detects unseen blood and gives an early warning sign. Most bowel cancers start with wart like growths on the wall of the gut known as a polyp. Polyps become more common as we get older.

A poor diet that is high in fats and sugar with too little fibre can increase the risk of bowel disorders. The same is true of smoking tobacco, being overweight or taking too little exercise. People with a history of bowel cancer are more likely to develop it themselves too.

The outcomes for bowel cancer are better if it is diagnosed early. The most common symptoms are a change in bowel habit and rectal bleeding. There may be no obvious symptoms in the early stages.
