Total and HDL cholesterol

There is more than one kind of cholesterol and not all cholesterol is bad. Two types are called high and low density cholesterol.

High density is also known as HDL (high density lipoprotein). About 20% of cholesterol is transported as HDL, which is mostly protein and not much fat. HDL actually helps prevent cholesterol building up in the arteries. Low levels of HDL are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. HDL is sometimes referred to as "good cholesterol". Women tend to have a higher HDL cholesterol level than men.

This pack contains two finger prick tests. The first determines your total cholesterol level and the second your HDL level.

A high HDL level and low Total Cholesterol level (below 5.2mmol/l) is most desirable.
