Selenium is a trace element, which was first regarded as a poison until it was shown to prevent degeneration of liver tissue. Modern lifestyles coupled with over farming has meant that in the UK we are particularly deficient, with an average dietary intake of 31ug/day (Government recommended intake 60-70ug/day).
Selenium carries out its main function as part of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. Glutathione peroxidase is an antioxidant that protects intracellular (inside the cell) structures against oxidative damage by free radicals.
Selenium has been used to treat a variety of disorders. Its primary use is as an antioxidant therapy for improving the immune system. Although it has been shown to be effective in healthy heart, inhibitor of the effects of heavy metals such as mercury (amalgam fillings), production of anti-inflammatory prostalandin's (rheumatoid arthritis), production of thyroxine hormone.
Taking 100ug/day is recommended for general well being, and 200ug/day has been shown to give a therapeutic benefit.
