Butterbur is an English name for Petasites hybridus, a herbaceous plant which is found in Europe and parts of North Africa and Asia. The plant grows in damp, marshy areas and along riverbanks with large heart-shaped leaves. The name butterbur comes from the reported practice of using the leaves to wrap butter, during the hot weather. Butterbur root is medicinally employed as a heart stimulant, acting both as a cardiac tonic and also as a diuretic. It has been in use as a remedy in fevers, asthma, colds and urinary complaints. In more recent times, scientific studies showed that specially prepared extracts were effective in treating migraine sufferers, reducing the occurrence and duration of attacks.
