Description

Pharma Nord Bio-Carnitine 250mg 125 Capsule
Carnitine is an amino acid-like substance involved in the metabolism of  dietary fatty acids.  The body’s requirement for carnitine is partially provided by synthesis within the kidneys from the amino acid lysine. Some carnitine may also be obtained from dietary sources, primarily meat since vegetables and fruit contain relatively little carnitine.
Carnitine levels may be depleted by intense physical activity and aging. Athletes and the elderly are therefore at risk of carnitine deficiency; vegetarians may also be at risk of carnitine deficiency if their diet contains low levels of lysine. Carnitine supplements are available in several chemical forms- only the L-form of carnitine is biologically active (the D-form is inactive). Carnitine levels are reduced by a high fat diet, certain drugs (e.g. valproic acid antibiotics) or metabolic stress.
What does Bio-Carnitine do?
Carnitine is responsible for the transport of long chain fatty acids into mitochondria, the organelles where energy is produced within cells. Carnitine also transports toxic substances out of the mitochondria to prevent their accumulation during normal metabolism. Carnitine acts in synergy with coenzyme Q10 in the metabolism of fatty acids.
Carnitine is present in all tissues within the body, with the highest levels found in those tissues with the highest utilisation of fatty acids as an energy source, such as the heart and skeletal muscles.

Are there any adverse effects from taking Bio-Carnitine

The D-form of carnitine may cause adverse effects by interfering with the beneficial action of L-carnitine.

Pharma Nord recommends 1 tablet per day.
The intake generally recommended for L-carnitine is 1500 to 4000mg/day. There is no UK Recommended Daily Allowance for carnitine.
