Supplemental vitamin D can be obtained in two forms, ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3). The cholecalciferol form of vitamin D3 is metabolised approximately three-fold more effectively within the body than the ergocalciferol form.
Vitamin D3 (also known as cholecalciferol) is a fat soluble vitamin, produced within the body when the skin is exposed to uv radiation from sunlight. People living in northern latitude countries such as the UK are at risk of vitamin D deficiency, particularly during the winter months. Darker skinned ethnic minorities and the elderly are especially at risk.
What does Bio-Vitamin D3 do?
Vitamin D3 increases the absorption of calcium from the digestive tract, and reduces the excretion of calcium, thereby helping to regulate blood calcium levels. These effects ensure that calcium levels are maintained and allow adequate levels to be stored in bones and teeth. If blood calcium levels are too low, calcium may be mobilised from bones for use elsewhere in the body, resulting in bone weakening.
In addition to maintaining healthy bones and teeth, vitamin D3 also contributes to the normal functioning of the muscles and immune system.
About Pharma Nord Bio-Vitamin D3
Bio-Vitamin D3 contains vitamin D3 dissolved in cold pressed olive oil, encapsulated in small, easy to swallow “pearls” of soft gelatine. Bio-Vitamin D3 is available in three strengths, 800IU, 1000IU and 5000IU.
Bio-Vitamin D3 is manufactured under Danish pharmaceutical control. The preparation is blister packed for maximum bio-availability.
Suitable for all the family.
Are there any adverse effects from taking Bio-Vitamin D3?
Vitamin D supplementation is generally well tolerated. People with hyperparathyroidism and sarcoidosis should not take vitamin D supplements without consulting a medical practitioner. People who receive adequate sunlight exposure do not need as much vitamin D in their diet as those who receive minimal exposure. Pregnant and lactating women and those on medication should seek professional advice prior to taking nutritional supplements.
How much should you take?
Pharma Nord recommends the following…
800IU – 1-5 capsules per day, or as directed by a physician.
1000IU – 1-5 capsules per day, or as directed by a physician.
5000IU – 1 capsule per day, or as directed by a physician.
The UK Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for Vitamin D is 5mcg per day. This amount is purely to avoid deficiency and has long been viewed as inadequate, (for more information ask for our leaflet ‘Why the RDA is not enough’). The body’s ability to manufacture vitamin D declines with age.
