Description
Haematonyl is an iron formula completed with supporting nutrients (synergists). Iron is the central component of the oxygen-carrying haemoglobin molecule in the red blood cell. By means of haemoglobin, red blood cells take up oxygen in the lungs and transport it throughout the body. Furthermore, iron is needed in a number of important enzyme systems in the body (inc. cytochrome catalysis). Iron is stored in the muscles in the form of myoglobin. Iron absorption is a subtle process and is influenced by many factors. In general, the essential mineral is only reabsorbed from food in small quantities. For optimum iron uptake and metabolism, a number of synergists need to be available in sufficient quantities. The most important of these are found in Haematonyl.

Most important characteristics:

  • Contains organically bound iron in an easily absorbable form
  • Contains a vitamin B complex
  • Contains a relatively high dose of vitamin C, which aids in iron uptake
  • Contains all synergists required for optimum uptake of iron and for iron metabolism

Usage
Take 1 capsule daily during or immediately after a meal.
In certain situations it could be necessary to raise the dosage to 4 capsules a day for a certain period of time (around 6 weeks). After this, a renewed check on iron status is recommended.

Warning
Not to be used in cases of iron overload disorder (hemochromatosis).
Iron is a pro-oxidant. In principle, increasing the iron level in the body can lead to increased oxidation of LDL cholesterol and increased damage to the walls of the blood vessels. Increased iron levels can also cause other consequences of elevated blood pressure. As such, adding antioxidants to the regimen is strongly advised.
High intake of other minerals (particularly calcium, magnesium and zinc) could inhibit iron absorption. Anti-inflammatory medication, e.g. aspirin and ibuprofen, can boost iron-loss through intestinal bleeding. Tetracyclines and high doses of aspirin are known to inhibit iron absorption. Phytates (in cereals), oxalates (e.g. rhubarb) and tannins (e.g. tea) in the diet can form unsoluble compounds with iron, thereby hindering absorption as well. Interactions with regular medication and other natural health products may occur. Please consult an expert about this.

Synergism
Due to the pro-oxidant nature of iron, it is advised to support the therapy with powerful antioxidants, such as provided by Santioxan or Flavoxan. The formula contains a number of important synergists of iron metabolism, including vitamin C.

Vitamin C helps converting botanical non-heme iron into heme iron in the intestinal tract, thereby improving iron absorption.

In addition to this product, a good basic diet is recommended, as is basic supplementation of Multi Vital Forte, Vitamin C 1000 ascorbate complex and Omega 3 liquid (or Omega 3 capsules).
