DESCRIPTION

Trimethylglycine (TMG = betaine) is a substance related to choline. Choline (tetramethyl glycine) contains four methyl groups and betaine (Trimethylglycine) contains three. When a methyl group is

split off from TMG dimethylglycine (DMG, also called vitamin B15 or pangamic acid) is formed.

These split off methyl groups can be used to methylate homocysteine, and this forms methionine

and eventually S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe).

Betaine anhydrate is important as a methyl donor for methylation processes, including the metabolism of homocysteine. The extent to which the body is able to methylate determines the activation and deactivation of many important substances in the body. This ability decreases with aging. Betaine is therefore important for the nervous system and has a nerve strengthening effect, especially in children. Betaine also protects the liver and particularly supports the lipid metabolism in the liver. Betaine plays

a role in the synthesis of carnitine. That is the reason why betaine provides energy and improves the performance by supporting the oxidative respiration in the cells of the body. And hence has a positive effect on endurance.

Betaine is often present in supplements in the form of betaine-HCl. This connection however is primarily intended as a source of HCl (hydrochloric acid) for people who want support in maintaining a normal gastric acidity. Too much betaine-HCl would be released when taking the doses needed for the below described applications.

Most important features of Betaine anhydrate powder:

  • Only pure betaine (Betaine anhydrate), NO betaine-hydrochloride (Betaine-HCl)
  • Contains no excipients

USAGE
Take 1 to 4 times a day 2 measuring spoons dissolved in water or fruit juice. One level measuring spoon equals approximately 0.6 gram powder. It is best to take betaine during or immediately after a meal.

  • A relatively high dose of betaine is often used to achieve a correct homocysteine level: 6 gram powder per day, spread evenly throughout the day.
  • A dose of 0.5 to 1 gram is generally sufficient to support the cardiovascular system.
  • The recommended dosage to support the liver (for example when there is excessive use of alcohol) is 1 to 2 grams powder per day. Lower doses are used as general support for the liver function.

TMG can cause an unpleasant body odour in people who suffer from the rare deficiency of the enzyme dimethylglycine-dehydrogenase. A measuring spoon is included.

WARNING
Regular medication and natural health products can possibly be affected; consult an expert about this.

SYNERGISM
Betaine works in closely with other nutrients, especially SAMe, folic acid and the vitamins B6 and B12 to breakdown homocysteine. The product Vitamin B6 plus 50 mg contains the last three of these substances in relevant amounts, and hence is a good synergistic supplement when using betaine anhydrate powder.

In addition to this product, a good basic diet is recommended, as is basic supplementation of Multi Vital Forte, Vitamin C 1000 ascorbate complex and Omega 3 liquid (or Omega 3 capsules).
